Lucille Rose Swisher, a long time resident of the Bay Area, died on May 6, 2016 at the age of 95 in Concord, California. She died of natural causes. Born on August 29, 1920 in Oakland, Lucille was the daughter of Frank Marcus and Ida Von Hatten Marcus. Lucille grew up near Lake Merritt in Oakland with her parents and brother, Robert Marcus, and grandfather, Frank Marcus, Senior. Lucille's father was born in San Francisco in 1883, and her mother in Madison, Wisconsin in 1894. Lucille's ancestry is from the Alsace Lorraine area of northern France.

Lucille, called Lucy by her family and friends, attended Cleveland Grammar School and Oakland High School. After business school, Lucy married Richard (Dick) F. Swisher, an attorney and CPA, in May of 1942. They raised 5 children near Lake Merritt in Oakland.

Lucy was a beloved mother, wife, daughter, grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend. Lucy was a beautiful homemaker and an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes PTA. She had a keen intellect and great sense of humor. She enjoyed golf, sewing, bridge, gardening, being in nature, Japanese paint brushing, and was an excellent cook. Lucy was a loyal friend and a true lady, and volunteered in hospitals and on the Grand Jury. After her children were grown, Lucy and Dick moved to Castro Valley, California.

Lucy was a devoted member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic church in Oakland, and Our Lady of Grace Catholic church in Castro Valley. She was always ready with food or a kind word to someone in need at the church. Lucy also volunteered at the Treasures Hospice Thrift Shop in San Leandro. After Dick died, she traveled with friends to Europe many times in her late 70's and early 80's.

Lucy is survived by her 5 children: John Swisher, William Swisher, Tom Swisher, Kate Powers, and Michael Swisher; 4 daughters-in-law: Marilyn Swisher, Marilyn Swisher, Jan Swisher, and Karen Swisher; 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Lucy is also survived by her sister-in-law Jane Marcus and 2 nephews James Marcus and Jeff Marcus.

A Memorial Mass will be held Thursday, May 12, 2016 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Grace Church, 3433 Somerset Ave, Castro Valley. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the hospice program of your choice.
