Marilyn Kay Chapman passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2007 in a Boise care facility after a two and a half year battle with cancer.
Marilyn was born January 10, 1939 at Oakland, California. Her adoptive parents were Walter F. "Pete" and Lyle Lind Schag, then of Oakland but both formerly of Jerome, Idaho.
She was educated in the Oakland Public School System, her 1957 graduating class having just celebrated their 50th Reunion in Oakland this year.
She went on to San Francisco State University but after spending many of her formative years summering with her several cousins in Boise she found the lure of Idaho too much to resist, and enrolled in the College of Idaho (now Albertson College of Idaho) in 1958.
She graduated in June of 1961 with a teaching certificate, and went to work immediately, first in Parma and then moving to the Meridian School district where she taught for nearly forty years until her retirement in 2002.
In August of 1961 she married William M. Chapman of Evanston, Illinois whom she met at The College of Idaho. In November of 1968 they were blessed with the arrival of Jeanette Leslie Chapman, who was to be their only child.
Marilyn is survived by her husband Bill, her daughter Jeanette and son in law Eric Kurtz of Denver and three terrific grandchildren, Micaela, age 8, Talia, age 6 and Jasper, age 2.
Special gratitude from the family goes to Drs. Matt Schwarz, Norm Zuckerman and John Gamboa and their staffs for their competent and loving care over the last two and a half years. Also thanks to the staff at Mountain States Tumor Institute Meridian where so much time has been spent. We also owe a debt of gratitude to Life Care Center of Treasure Valley where Marilyn's last hours were spent. All involved have shown great love and great skill in dealing with this awful disease.
Marilyn will be long remembered by the hundreds of students she mentored during her outstanding teaching career. Even in the days leading up to her death she was frequently stopped on the street and in stores by former students who instantly knew who she was and wanted to visit with her. She leaves behind her many, many changed lives and fond memories. She will be missed.
There will be a brief reception at the family home in Meridian Monday, June 4 from four to six pm for friends to visit. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Friends of the Ada County Public Library, Marilyn Chapman Fund, Victory Road Branch: 10664 W. Victory Road, Boise, Idaho 83709.
