FROM STAFF REPORTS

HAYWARD -- An Oakland teen driving at high speeds through a hilly area died instantly when he lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a tree Saturday night, authorities said.

The Alameda County Coroners Bureau identified the youth as Yuehwa Howe 17, of Oakland. He was also known as Sammy Howe.

The crash occurred at about 7:20 p.m. Saturday when Howe and two youths were driving westbound on Fairmont Drive east of Foothill Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Police said Howe lost control of the Honda Prelude they were in and ran off the road, through a barbed wire fence and then struck a tree.

Police said he was pronounced dead on the scene.

Two passengers, Gary Wong, 18, of San Leandro and an unidentified 17-year-old boy were taken to the hospital.

Police said Wong was in the front passenger seat and suffered major injuries, including head trauma, scrapes and abrasions. He is listed in serious but stable condition at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.

The unidentified boy riding in the back seat was also taken to Eden Medical Center and treated for minor injuries, including a sprained ankle.

Police said all three young men were wearing seat belts. Howe was driving at about 60 mph when the accident occurred, police said. Coroners said they will have to wait several weeks for a toxicology report to see if alcohol was involved.
